The Motorola Droid X update for Android 2.3 Gingerbread is getting closer by the day. Supposedly, Motorola sent the update over to Verizon Wireless and is waiting for further testing. Already,3 leaked versions of the update have emerged in the past weeks so an official release could not be far. And now it apparently is just around the corner. If Verizon has really gotten their hands on it, the OTA update will start rolling out and the end of this following week, possibly Friday the 13th of May. Let’s hope it’s not bad luck.
You must keep in mind that this is an unofficial release date and is subject to change. It will remain a rumor until mid-week when hopefully an announcement will be made by Motorola and Verizon.
If the Motorola Droid X will in fact receive the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update at the end of this week, it will make the Droid X the first smartphone to receive an OTA to Gingerbread in the US, apart from Google’s branded devices, Nexus One and Nexus S.
This is also probably Droid’s last major update, as its successor the Motorola Droid X2, seems to be just around the corner and is getting ready to be launched in the near future.
This should certainly be welcomed news from Droid X owners who have been looking forward to this update ever since Froyo finished rolling out back in September of last year. Some of them were too eager to get their hands on Android 2.3, so rooted “Xs” are running around powered by leaked OTA builds.
Update: Today, Verizon approved the 2.3 OTA submitted by Motorola, and the update will land on Friday, the 13th of May. You should see a notification status on your smartphone on that date or, to rush the process, just go to Menu – > Settings -> About Phone -> System Update and select Download.
