Good news for Verizon fans and users: Your favorite carrier will be selling the iPad 2 from the very first day it becomes available. As Apple made it clear you will be able to purchase an iPad 2 as early as the 11th of March. The Verizon release date for the iPad 2 is the same 11th of March but you can expect it to become available at 5 PM, on the time other retailers have made public.
Apple’s iPad 2 has been one of the most highly anticipated devices of the start of 2011 and as far as we can see it did not disappoint. We all expected a pretty consistent upgrade over the original iPad and we dare to say we got that. Along with a slimmer device altogether, the iPad 2 has a thinner screen bezel and it certainly looks better that the original. The iPad was 13mm thick while the iPad 2 is only 8.8mm thick.
While the first iPad offered some pretty nice specs at its launch the time has come for an improvement. The iPad 2 offers the same 9.7 inch LED backlit IPS capacitive LCD but this was and still is one of the best displays you can find on a handheld device so no worries here. The new iPad offers a more powerful 1 GHz dual core Apple A5 processor which in theory should double the performance of the original iPad CPU. No word on the RAM memory yet but we expect it to be 1 GB in size. As its previous model, the iPad 2 comes in 16GB / 32GB / 64GB flavors. The graphic performance claimed by Apple is four times as better as the original iPad and we might just believe them since the GPU found inside the newer model is the PowerVR SGX543MP which can include up to 4 GPUs.
The second generation iPad also features 2 cameras, a VGA front facing one for those all important video calls and a presumably 5 MP back facing one capable of recording 720p videos at 30 frames per second.
On the connectivity side the iPad 2 will not let you down as it will feature everything from 3G connectivity and the usual Wi Fi a/b/g/n to Quadband HSPA or CDMA / EV-DO Rev. A. It will also have the 2.1 +EDR version of Bluetooth.
If you consider all of these specs you might be tempted to think the battery life will be very bad but Apple has made it clear that the estimated battery life should be the same as the original iPad (about 10 hours). This is mostly due to the 25 Wh battery found inside the iPad 2 but the power optimizations of the hardware surely come in handy.
The iPad 2 will come with the iOS 4.3 update from the start. You can find out more about more about this upgrade by reading our article about iOS 4.3 features.
Unlike last year, Apple’s iPad 2 will have to face some stiff competition in the form of the Motorola XOOM, the HP TouchPad, and the BlackBerry PlayBook so we will just have to wait and see how well it does. Apple has timed this Verizon release date just right. The iPad 2 will also come with a nice magnetic screen cover dubbed Smart Cover. You can see it in action in the video below.
