Knowing how to backup the HTC Incredible data, apps, contacts, or messages is very important, especially if you don’t want to lose precious information from your phone, or from its SD card. Most of you don’t know that each time you try to do something with the device, like making an OS upgrade, change the default settings, root it, or install new ROMs your “saves” might be erased without your knowledge. But, don’t worry, as the backup process is easy to complete, all you will have to do is to follow the steps from the guide below.
Also, this will be the first step to do, if you are looking forward in rooting the HTC Incredible, or installing custom ROMs, such as CyanogenMod, therefore take it seriously. In this step-by-step guide you will learn how to save all your personal data and recent applications to a PC, a MAC, SD card, or on the Android cloud and how to restore them afterwards. The Android cloud it’s an app introduced by Google and available via the Android Market, which will help us make things easier. As you will see, the procedure is similar with the one we have explained for other handsets, like the LG G2X, or Nexus One, so there shouldn’t be any issues completing it.
In order to back up the HTC Incredible properly you will have to download some tools from the Android Market; the software are free and easy to install and you have it all detailed in the how to guide. If you have any questions, or if you can’t succeed with the process, tell us (in the comments area) so we can help you through.
Now, below, you will learn how to save the data, apps, messages/MMS and contacts from your Incredible; you should be done in a few minutes, so take a look.
How to backup the HTC Incredible
Contacts and Calendar
This can be completed in two ways: via the SD card, or syncing with Google. I recommend using the second one, but it is your choice.
- For the SD card follow:
- Go to the People application.
- Press the Menu button.
- Tap on the Import/Export icon.
- Choose Export to SD card.
- Then you can transfer the files on your PC / MAC. When you want it back, follow the same steps above and on the last part, choose Import from SD card and you are done.
- The second method is by syncing with Google; here is what you should do:
Go to Menu->Settings-> Accounts & sync; choose “Add account”; enter a valid Gmail address and then choose what you want to save. You can backup different “stuffs”, because Google Docs, Contacts, Gmail and Calendar will be available for you. In a few words, the operating system will make a copy of your data and when you will want it back you will have to sync once more.
SMS / MMS messages and call logs
Here, download the app named SMS Backup + by Jan Berkel. You can get it from the Market and it si free and more important it works every time. The apps will use a separate label in Gmail/Google Calendar and allowing later restoration. You need to have IMAP enabled in Gmail and the correct time zone set.
Saving Market Apps
You will have to get another tool from the same Market. Download the Astro File Manager software and follow the steps:
- Open Astro.
- Press Menu.
- Tap on Tools.
- Select the Application Manager / Backup.
- Select the apps you want to save and click Backup.
For restoring the apps, install Astro again and follow the same steps. Then, click “Backed Up Apps” and choose what you want back on your HTC Incredible.
For saving your data you will be able to use both, the SD card and the PC/MAC; just follow: copy/paste (drag and drop) the info you want to save from the phone on the computer/MAC/SD card. When you want the data restored do exactly the same thing, but starting from the end (PC/SD card/ MAC->handset).
